Installing Transfer Service on ReadyNas 314

Post by siziegler »

Hello

As I plan to do an offsite backup, I believe that there should be a VEEAM transfer service running on the other side of the VPN tunnel to get optimal performance. I have a ReadyNAS 314 device and would like to install the transfer service directly on this device. Obviously I could use a separate computer but having everything on the ReadyNas would be very nice.

I found existing threads discussing this problem http://forums.veeam.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8883. However, this is quite a while ago and I am not sure if the solution still applies. Nevertheless, I was following the proposed steps and copied the Std.pm file to the current Perl installation folder but without success (getting also the
Timeout waiting for operation "(cd/tmp&&perl veeam_soap3a800455-2bda-4b02-b6b0-d4f4061150e7.pl -d -c -l lib....
error message as in the previous thread.

Below you see the details of the current Perl installation, which may help some of you to spot the problem. Unfortunately I am neither a Perl nor a Linux guy :oops:

Re: Installing Transfer Service on ReadyNas 314

Post by veremin »

There is a list of requirements to make Linux system act as a VB&R repository:

• Install latest ReadyNAS firmware
• Enable SSH
• Install Perl
• Specify a user account that can login to Linux system via SSH, that is also able to execute a perl script, and that has read/write permissions to the path selected.

If you’ve successfully followed all of these steps, and still experience the aforesaid issue, I’d recommend opening a ticket with our support team and letting them investigate it directly.

Anyway, sometimes it might be easier just to mount your NAS to any existing Linux box (RHEL, Ubuntu etc.) and later add this server as a repository.

Thanks.

- Latest ReadyNAs firmware is installed using the integrated update service (V6.06)
- SSH is enabled and I can login with Putty
- If Perl is correctly installed I don't know. This is why I posted the details of my installation, hoping that somebody can tell me if everything is ok. To me it looks as if Perl correctly installed.
- I am using the root account, so I believe that it should have all necessary read/write/execute permissions

Then, it might be worth opening a ticket with our support team, since it’s a way too hard to investigate successfully any technical issue through forum correspondence.

Thanks.

Thanks to the excellent VEEAM support team we were able to resolve this problem. The exisiting PERL installation on the ReadyNAS 314 was incomplete and needed to be updated using the SSH console:

apt-get install build-essential
cpan (--> Auto config, auto connect)
make install
install Bundle::CPAN

After that I was able to install the VEEAM transfer service on my ReadyNAS box. In addition, I installed also the OpenVPN client to access the company network. Now I have a single box for VEEAM offsite backups, that I installed at home, without the need for a separate server or VPN gateway.

I'm currently looking at a windows based small NAS appliance that should be able to perform a similar role, with the added bonus of being able to be a proxy as well. Will post some details when I have more info :)
