Is it possible to share a repository among several backup servers ?

Post by Fatih »

Hi

I have a question about sharing repository.
We have several hardened linux immutable repository servers. Right now they are dedicated to one backup server each. We are planning to purchase new ones and are looking out for possibilites to share them.
I noticed in the documentation:

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120

In the note at the bottom it says you should not point repositories to same path.

If I understand it correctly then it should be possible to share a physical hardened linux immutable repository as long as you are not using the same path or nested paths ?

/mnt/repo1
/mnt/repo2
/mnt/repo3

Above configuration should then be valid if each repo1/2/3 is configured as repo's in three different backup servers ?

How are future version upgrades going to handle this scenario where you could maybe be in a position where you upgrade one backup server at a time ? Will there be different versions of veeam components at the linux repository server at the same time ?

Correct, each backup server/repository must use its own dedicated path.

Your other questions are already covered in the FAQ: VBR FAQ - Hardened Repository
Q: Can a Hardened Repository be shared between different backup servers?
A: Technically that works, but it's an unsupported scenario.
1) Officially sharing servers / components between different VBR servers is unsupported. The reason for that is that the two VBR servers don't know about each other which means the server could be overloaded due to too many tasks. Plus it creates challenges during upgrade, as all components need to be updated together. So that scenario is not tested by Veeam QA.
2) As long as you keep an eye on the load and do not overload, it works fine
3) Also sharing a Hardened Repository between multiple VBR works fine with 11a. Each VBR server gets its own certificate (so that scenario was considered during development).
Please note: When facing technical or performance issues, our customer support team may ask you to remove the hardened repository server from additional backup server before providing any help or hot fixes.

Just to expand upon what @Mildur has said, this is one of the biggest reasons to avoid sharing a repository between multiple VBRs. I've done it before, but its always more trouble than its worth. Yes you save money on your capital costs by buying one repository rather than multiple, but your operational costs go up as you now have to plan upgrades to *all* VBR servers using that one shared repository at the same time. Not to mention you've now built out a more significant single point of failure, as issues with that one shared repository now effects all VBR servers using it. As soon as the Veeam components get upgraded on the repository because VBR 'A' was upgraded, VBR 'B' and VBR 'C' will no longer be able to connect, hence upgrading them all at the same time.

Ok , thanks. That was what I was expecting. Maybe the NOTE in the documentation should be more clear about using multiple repository is about using same physical server for one backup server. It's easy to misunderstand it and maybe think it is supported to have several repositorys shared for several backup servers.
