Linux hardened repo - software raid

Post by dhayes16 »

Hello all. I know the overall recommendation for a repo is a server with enterprise class hardware raid for obvious reasons (battery backed, power outage, etc) . But I am curious on the thoughts of Linux software raid via MD for smaller sites that might not have the budget for hardware raid based servers. And these devices would be mirrored via raid 1 as opposed to parity raid 5,etc.

We are looking at providing a low cost but reliable solution for smaller smbs with a Linux hardened repo as the performance tier with s3 object as their cloud archive tier.

Just some thoughts. Thanks. Have a great week.

Hello,
I know customers using MD raid since almost two decades... so if the question in general is, whether mdadm / mdraid works, then yes. I inherited around 10 servers around 2008 and I did not like them, because no red light blinks at the server. That made it more complicated to tell somebody which disk to change (especially if one has not set up the machine). But technically they worked.

Best regards,
Hannes
