Need help configuring Retention Policy and GFS

Post by surlic »

Hello,

I'm new to Veeam and I'd like to implement my company's backup policies, but I'm not sure how to configure the backup jobs. I'm hoping you can help me.

We have: Server 1-3, Server 4 is the Veeam Server, NAS
Server 1 has very important data, Server 2 and Server 3 have less important data. Storage on the Veeam Server is limited, but we have a NAS for long term storage.

What I need:
  • Server 1 should have daily backups with a full backup every week. Due to limited storage, I would like to have 1 full and 6 incremental backups on the Veeam Server.
The NAS should hold a copy of the current week's backups, as well as backups of the last 4 weeks. Then I'd like to keep one monthly backup for every past month of the year (12 in total per year), and finally one yearly backup for 2 years.

    Backup Job:
    - 7 days of retention points
    - forward incremental with a synthetic full backup every Saturday

    Backup Copy Job:
    - pruning - every 7 days
    - GFS: 7 daily, 4 weekly, 12 monthly, 2 yearly

Are these settings correct to achieve the policy?
  • Server 2 should have daily backups with a full backup every week. I would like to have 1 full and 6 incremental backups on the Veeam Server.
The NAS should hold backups of the last 4 weeks, then one backup of the last 3 months and one yearly backup.

    Backup Job:
    - 7 days of retention points
    - forward incremental with a synthetic full backup every Sunday

How should I set the Backup Copy Job?
  • Server 3 really only needs 1 weekly backup on the Veeam Server, because the data on this one rarely changes.
On the NAS I would like to keep backups of the last three months (1 backup per month), as well as one yearly backup.

How should I set the Backup Job and the Backup Copy job?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Suzana

Hello Suzana,

Thank you for the detailed description of the desired configuration!
As for Backup copy jobs - yes, you configure the number of weekly/monthly/yearly full backups on "Specify Target Repository and Retention Settings" step when you configure a Backup Copy job.

As for a backup job for Server 3, I'm not sure I got you correctly.
Do you need to run full backup every week or do you mean to run a full backup once and then proceed with weekly incrementals?

Thanks!

Hello Natalia,

Thank you for your reply. About Server 3: If it's possible to do incremental backups weekly, that'd be a good idea, but I don't see how/where to schedule a weekly schedule instead of a daily one.

Edit:
Never mind, I think I found it. There's a Schedule option where I can select weekly or even monthly backups.

Yes, you can configure the required schedule and also configure if you need full backups (active full/synthetic).

Thanks!
