NTFS ReFS questions

Post by Poweruser »

Gostev, please tell us, what Filesystem we should use for repo if its an all-in-one machine?
Will we be fine with NTFS?
Or will we need to use refs or sth else (windows only, one host, no NAS..)
(One phys. host with some VMs... thats the whole infrastructure..)

What do you suggest? Will NTFS be ok if reverse is lost by update?
If refs, are there any restrictions by veeam? can i put my hyper-v machines on refs without restrictions on windows server, too?

For the case of a single all-in-one Windows server I highly recommend ReFS of course. You will be fine with NTFS too, however the backup performance will be much worse comparing to ReFS (but still a few times better than with reverse incremental on NTFS).

Performance is not the problem, the Backup works at night..
But i fear NTFS hast Problems if VHDX etc. resides there?

Can i put all Veeam Data, Program Data etc on ReFS, too?
I dont have an extra volume as Veeam REPO.
I just have C and D :-)
C System and main Apps, D Data Veeam Repo, VHDX, ISO Images, Configs etc.

Does ReFS Support Quota and NTFS Permissions and Shares right now?

Splitting into separate thread as it completely hijacks the original topic.

I don't believe Microsoft supports boot from ReFS still.

As for the rest of your questions, I'm not aware about most of these details but since this never came up here on the forums before, most likely there are no issues or limitations. But may be some other forum members can chime in here. Although honestly, these question suit Microsoft forums much better.

I think thats not so much offtopic as you might think.
Here you suggest du use refs and drop reverse inc. and ntfs.
so it was not my idea, to suggest refs!
anyway - if - it is suggested, all the normal constraints have to be obeyed, otherwise performance is the least important thing on a server compared to: not compatible/not working/heavy restrictions etc ;-)

ReFS has a lot of benefits over NTFS. The exact implementation and ReFS version is tied to the operating system version you're using.

One thing to watch out for is that Windows will try to automatically upgrade your ReFS version to the latest with an OS in-place upgrade. This is typically where we see issues. Usually when upgrading a repository using ReFS I recommend a clean install and using VeeaMover instead of an in-place upgrade.
