Pause retention during DR situation

We are reviewing a DR scenario with Veeam and were wondering if there is an option to halt any retention policies from processing during a DR situation where every backup version might be crucial. (Such DRs can take a while as usually the first focus is the most mission critical servers and then slowly all other servers are brought back).

Doesn't removing backups from config prevent using them for restores until they are reimported in which case retention processing restarts?

No, retention does not apply to imported backups.
