Query regarding retention

Post by ronronster »

Hi,

I have searched and read articles but seem none the wiser regarding retention for veeam retention policys (it seems very confusing)

I have the following:

1) Main backup job - forever incremental 14 restore points and this works fine

Copy job
2) Offsite backup job - forever incremental 3 restore points and this works fine
3) Local retention job - set as forever incremental - set to keep 12 restore monthly backups. with 20 restore points in total. This is not working as I would expect.

I am aiming to have some sort of local grandfather, father son retention policy.
I am aiming for at least a monthly backup for the last 1 or ideally 2 years.
I was under the impression veeam would merge these restore points and delete them once 20 restore points were exceeded (leaving just the monthly image).
However I currently have in excess of 25 restore points in the last month and half.
Am I missing something as to why it is not merging files. I have now run out of disk space on my retention location.
Is there anywhere I can go to view logs regarding retention?

This seems to me a fairly straight forward setup and can't identify where the issue is.
Thanks in advance for any replies

Isn't "Read the entire restore point from source backup" check box enabled by any chance? What about excessive restore points - are those marked as GFS or as ordinary ones? Thanks.

Thanks for your response.
No the "Read the entire restore point from source backup" check box was not ticked. I had previously tried to tick it to see if it made any difference and it didn't.

I can't see any marked as GFS (not sure I am looking in the right spot)
By my schedule it says there should be a restore point for the first sunday of the month. There is no restore point for that date.

I have include a copy of dir from destination folder if that helps

When looking to perform a restore it shows that the full backup was on 19th and incremental jobs since then.
Although the files show different as you can see the full image date shows the 12th

Thanks
