I have tried to find a definitive answer in the documentation, but I've come up short, so I apologize for such a simple question.
I can't find anywhere that it says snapshots are leveraged when backing up a VM via Direct San Access transport mode. I can see how it might work with LUNs presented to the physical proxy in read only mode, but if no snapshots are used, how can application-aware processing be enabled?
My question stems from the steps on page 27 in the v8 User Guide(Data Retrieval in Direct SAN Access Mode) compared to the steps on page 30 (Data Retrieval and Restore in Virtual Appliance Mode).
There is no mention of a snapshot being taken during the process when Direct SAN Access is in play.
Thanks!

Re: Quick question about Direct SAN access
The Snapshot will be taken (and released) by Vsphere as usual when not using vendor integration, and thus those files will be backed up by Veeam (from the SAN)
We are using direct proxy mode quite happily since V8 and prefer it much over hot-add since there is "no" risk of disks getting stuck or locked when mounted to the veeam server.
Only restores are still very slow, in our case even direct san restores can't help there

Re: Quick question about Direct SAN access
Hi Justin,
VM snapshots are always leveraged no matter what transport mode you use for VM backups.
Thanks!

Re: Quick question about Direct SAN access
Thanks folks. That's what I thought, I just couldn't find evidence of it.
