Recommendations for copying/seeding large backup copy files

Post by edfops »

Any recommendations for how to seed/maintain backup copies from a remote site over the WAN? Since the backup copy can take 4-5+ days to initially seed, it cannot be done through Veeam because as soon as the regular production backups kick in the backup copy is stopped.

I had been thinking of creating backup copies locally and then using some 3rd party software to transfer these copies over the WAN, ideally being able to resume on disconnect and handle other WAN related issues. Anyone with experience on this front?

Ultimately, this is designed to stop using/managing tapes at each site while leveraging shared infrastructure at the datacenter, and providing a platform for DR for the remote sites.

If there's no possibility to ship some media with the backups to the remote location for seeding, you can use any tool to transfer backup files over WAN. Keep in mind though that backup copy job can be mapped to a single full backup file only; this can be either a regular full performed by the normal backup job according to its schedule (for which there are no any incrementals present yet) or the full created by the local backup copy job during its first run.

Best method then would be to create a backup copy job to local storage with ONE restore point? Create a new job with your desired restore points once the copy is in place and map it to the copied files?

Just a small note, the minimum allowed number of restore points for the backup copy job is 2, so you need to disable it after it's initial run.
