Recovering OS files

Post by AVIConsult »

Hello, is it possible to restore from backup files occupied by the operating system, for example (c:\windows\system32\config\SYSTEM) at the time of booting from recovery ISO? Or in the switched-off VM? I contacted technical support, I was told that there is no such functionality. But it is very necessary, for example, when an OS infection is detected, for example a week ago. And you only need to restore a damaged file, or a piece of registry.

Hi, AVIConsult
You can recover a file from the backup and store it somewhere, say C:\temp. After that, when you launch from Veeam Recovery Media, hit "Tools" -> "Command Prompt" and move said file over to system32 or whatever target will be. That should do the trick for the case, however in case of a ransomware\virus it might be best to roll entire C:\ back in time.

p.s. make sure you are performing supported overwrite - Microsoft tends to be quite restrictive about %systemroot%.
Thanks!

Yes, it is possible, but it is extremely inconvenient. Especially when you need to selectively restore system files. For example, drivers and registry. Also, when you manually copy, there are problems with the rights to files\folders. Is it possible to implement the functionality to restore files to a powered off virtual machine?
