ReFS v1 cannot be converted to ReFS v3

Post by agregersen »

Hi

Just to let everyone know that if you have a server pre Windows Server 2016 and plan to migrate to Windows Server 2016 and VBR 9.5, then it's not possible to migrate a ReFS volume from v1 to v3. You can mount a ReFS v1 volume on Windows Server 2016, but it will stay at ReFS v1 and there are no tools to make it a ReFS v3 volume - so the migration from NTFS and ReFS v1 are the same when you want to use the new features in VBR 9.5 in combination with Windows Server 2016 and ReFS v3.

Solutions:
Format a new volume with ReFS v3 and move/copy your data (following the Veeam guides for moving data). Whether the data reduction by refering to the same data blocks with remain when copied remain to be seen.

Hi Anders, thanks for sharing. For VMs you can, indeed, use VBR to migrate the data or try VEB for physical servers.
