Rotating USB via SMB

Hi,

We have a customer who has a backup copy job set up to rotating USB drives. These USB drives are connected to a NAS and shared via SMB.
Veeam is configured using the rotating media option and backups work fine.

The problem however is retention. Backup files are not being deleted at all despite having a 2 backup set retention configured.
Also, Veeam doesnt seem to know about the existing backups when a drive comes back into circulation so basically every time a drive is rotated it gets treated as a brand new drive.

Is this by design? I would have thought veeam would be able to keep track of if drive 1,2 3 etc is connected and also scan for existing backup files?

We are unable to connect the USB drives directly to the server due to USB passthrough not being supported on this hardware.

What you do is an unusual approach indeed. Yes, normally Veeam will track backups across rotated drives. But based on what you're seeing, looks like for this functionality to work you have to attach them directly to the backup repository server. Perhaps the code uses some drive id to keep track of backup files on external drives...
