Scheduled backup runs even though SDRS is migrating VM

Post by fourg »

We've hit an issue a few times with VMware where it's running a Storage DRS to balance our datastores and it may overlap with a daily scheduled Veeam backup. Veeam doesn't seem to recognize this and continues to attempt to run the backup job. Is there a way to prevent the job from running or just have it fail if a VM is in the middle of a live migration? While we aren't certain, it has appeared that both the SDRS and Veeam backup running at the same time causes major performance issues.

Thanks

Hi, Brent. Have you thought about rescheduling Storage DRS to happen outside of your backup window? Thanks.

Hi Gostev, no we had not been aware of the need to coordinate scheduling of SDRS and Veeam jobs, but it sounds like this is necessary based on your response.

Thanks

Being unaware of each other simultaneous run of both activities might lead to undesired consequences. Thus, the recommendations to execute them separately. Thanks.

Definitely understood, but our challenge is that we have some VM's in the multiple TB's and a vMotion can take longer than 24 hours. The only workaround we can think of for those is to manually stop the daily backup in Veeam until the vmotion is completed. Not sure if it's possible, but maybe a usage case Veeam could consider for the future as storage/memory gets cheaper and VM's get much bigger. I'll admit I'm not exactly sure how SDRS handles an active vMotion which ends up still running outside of the scheduled SDRS window.

May be a pre-job script that checks whether source VMs are being migrated at the moment and postpones a job in case of positive answer would do the trick for you? Thanks.

I think Vladimir suggestions makes the most sense. I have also seen storage migrations take over 24hr's especially going from one array to another where VAAI cant be leveraged
