Hello everyone,
The backup of our Veeam configuration database is quite slow, the backup takes about 6 hours. Our Veeam B&R configuration database is quite large (370GB). The reason for this will probably be that we do some file to tape backups. In the future, many more file to tape backups will be added, which means the database will continue to grow and the configuration database backup will take even longer.
I had a support case (Case #07217741) open on the topic, but unfortunately we didn't really come to any conclusion. Veeam's statement was that they were aware of the problem but could not offer any tuning options. Okay, I think we have to live with this situation.
Since I don't think we are anywhere near the largest Veeam customer (approx. 1000 VMs, 500TB file to tape backup) I would be interested to know if you have similar problems:
1. How big is your configuration database?
2. How long does it take to backup your configuration database?
3. How often does your configuration backup run?
4. Do you have a stomach ache because of the long running time (I think the restore will take about as long as the backup in the event of a disaster)?
Thanks alot and Best regards
Andreas

Re: Slow Configuration Database Backup
What's your backup target? we've had this on a DataDomain with a large config DB due to F2T indexes.
Also is the DB on the same server? If not are things like AV exclusions set and there are sufficient compute resources available?

Re: Slow Configuration Database Backup
Hello Mark,
Thanks for your answer. The configuration backup is written to a NetApp FAS8700 with 600 spinning disks. I don't think the backup repository is the bottleneck. The database is on the Veeam backup server (SSDs) (but we plan to separate this in the future). I don't think the CPU is the bottleneck either. The Veeam BackupServer has 16 vCPUs and an ESXi host with 2 x EPYC 7763 64-cores is used as a hypervisor.
May I ask how large your configuration database was and how long the backup took?
Best regards
Andreas

Re: Slow Configuration Database Backup
Hi Andreas
It was over 700GB and took around 8 hours If I recall to a DataDomain.
