SMTP notification doesn't send email

Hi everybody!
I'm new to Veeam Backup&Restore, our Company has just bought it, and I'm very glad of that!
Our backups jobs are running fine, but I'm not able to more receive email reports.
I've received them until last week without any problem, but since last Saturday I see a message into the backup's records saying that:

Code: Select all

Sending email report Failure sending mail. Unable to connect to the remote server A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable network xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:25
I've tried to modify the authentication setting into the Veeam options tab, by changing the account (really I don't need to authenticate into my SMTP server, but it makes no differences) or operating without authentication, the problem is still the same. The test run fine and I'm able to receive the test email message into the account I've configured, so I'm confused about where to look to find the issue.

Any idea?

I've just found what is causing the problem! Our antivirus server!!! Kaspersky seems to dislike that Veeam sends email :-/
Someone knows how to instruct kaspersky to not to block Veeam sending emails???

I guess you need to add all Veeam processes/files and services to the exclusion list, should help.

Yes, I did it right after I've posted my last message and I solved the issue.

What are the processes and files needed exactly? A list of these would help in future.

Hello Steve,

I will verify it with the devs on Monday, meanwhile can you use a wild card in the exclusion list? Something like *veeam* should do the trick. As to the files list, then "Veeam Backup & Replication\Backup" directory should be excluded.

The main issue I'm facing is trying to get Veeam to email notifications to Office 365.

I've been trying to figure out how to do this exactly without the need to put in an IIS SMTP Relay, by using stunnel.

I don't mind being a test subject to help you get this working for documentation for other companies utilising Office 365.

If you could troubleshoot it (sending email notification to Office 365) directly with our dev team by opening a support case, that would be highly appreciated. I'm still waiting for the list of exclusions though.

Managed to sort it out in the end, it was the McAffee AV blocking emails being sent out from anything other than Outlook.

Was able to telnet to our Ex2010 Hub Server and then able to send a test email to my account in Office 365. All good now!
