SQL Transcation Logs Backups - Point-In-time

Post by skydok »

Hi ,
I'm sure from side the procedure but want to be sure that i'm not missing somthing.
Supose i have the following scenario:
1.Daily Backup at 01:00 AM
2.Backup transaction logs every 15 Minutes (via Application Tab in Job)

If the Server got corrupted at 09:00 AM, In order to get to the closest point in time here i think about the following.
1.Restore Entire VM from 01:00 AM
2.Point-In-Time Restore after that via SQL Explorer to the closest time i got.

Questions:
1.Any diffrent Ideas?Maybe somthing i'm missing?
2.The Daily Backups can be Incremental/Reversed or need to be Active Full?

Hi skydok,

In my opinion it doesn't matter if the daily backups are incremental / reverse incremental or active full. With incremental backup the restore process of a whole virtual machine may take some more time, since there are more calculations made. With reverse incremental, the restore of a virtual machine goes very fast if you restore the most actual restore point, since the last restore point in reverse incremental is a calculated full backup.

More information about the backup methods:
Forward Incremental: http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/v ... ackup.html
Reverse Incremental: http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/v ... ackup.html

Check the Veeam blog for "How to restore a SQL Server Database":

I would do it like you mentioned. Restore the VM to the most actual state, and then get to the closest point in time for the SQL database.
Best regards,
Karl

Regarding the Methods you mentioned of course i'm familiar with them , just didn't got into the DEEPTH of SQL TRANS-LOGS "Must prequisites" therfore i know that it shouldn't mather as long as you probide a working VM with Database , but still usually i like to be on the safe side :)
