Suggestions for a 30 day rentention

Post by mark_e »

So....just a quick brief.
My organisation has spoke to our information commissioner and with heads of service in regards to backup, and not treating it as an archive. (FOIs etc)
So the decision has been made that backups will only have 30 restore points, so 30 days worth.

What would be the best way at setting this up?
There is no need for an offload to tape or offsite storage, as the backup solution is offsite to out production environment.
A scale out repository is setup with a total of 381TB (Formatted, RAID10)
Currently all jobs are setup as Incremental and to create synthetic full backups every Sunday. Also all are currently set to 30 restore points to keep on disk.

Hoping someone can help, and also that I've made it clear.....

Cheers!

Hello Mark,
I would suggest to create a copy of your backups with backup copy job to meet 3-2-1 rule.
Also note that with the provided settings you will have up to 36 restore points because the oldest restore points cannot be deleted until the whole chain is outdated. If you want 30 restore points sharp I would either disable synthetic full backups or set an option to transform previous backup chains into rollbacks or switch to Reverse incremental mode.
Thanks!
