SureBackup malware scan renders Veeam GUI unresponsive

Post by guitarfish »

I’ve been using Veeam B&R for years for backup, backup copy, and replication, and I’m now starting to use SureBackup. My initial test was a simple power on of a DC, test for DNS, heartbeat, ping, and run a malware scan, all of which worked fine.

Next I added a SQL server VM via Linked Jobs. I disabled the tests on the DC which is in the Application group, and enabled a malware scan on the SQL server. During the malware scan the Veeam GUI was practically unresponsive. It would take 30 sec for it to respond to a mouse click.

Veeam B&R runs in a Win Server 2019 VM on a vSphere 7 host. The host has a couple other VMs, all low utilization. The host has 16 logical processors, 32GB RAM, and SAS drives (DAS), and 4 1GB ethernet. (The host is reaching EOL and will be replaced with much more processor, memory, & storage). The Veeam VM has 4 CPU, 8GB RAM.

The VMs I tested with SureBackup use 4 CPU and 8GB RAM, but I chose the option to use 50% memory. When I experienced the issue, the Veeam VM didn’t show CPU usage more than 50%. Memory usage was around 8GB, but it usually always is.

Thoughts on what might be the problem?
Does Veeam use the antivirus software on the B&R system as the engine for the VM scans?

Thanks for the help!

Hi guitarfish

Antivirus scan runs on your assigned mount server.
For an All-In-One backup server where the repository is also connected on the backup server itself, mount server will also be the backup server.

8GB sounds really low with all the components.
- Antivirus
- backup server
- backup server console
- proxy
- repository
- mssql server for config database
- windows

You can check the memory requirements here:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110

I would try with more memory, if that doesn‘t help, please open a support case and let us know the case number. We cannot analyze such issues effectively over the forum.

OK, I upped the RAM from 8 to 16GB and it's much better. Interestingly, the memory usage on the B&R system still shows 8GB despite the added RAM.

I'd read through the System Requirements previously, and I'm not seeing anything other than basic memory recommendation for the B&R server, which is "Memory: 4 GB RAM plus 500 MB RAM for each concurrent job." Except for NAS Backup & CDP, which I'm not using. I think Veeam needs to add more info about memory, as needed for SureBackup.

Thanks for the help!

Hello guitarfish

I see all of this requirements (expect the Antivirus + MSSQL one) in our user guide I linked:
- backup server --> 4 GB plus 500 MB per concurrent Job (backup job, copy jobs, SureBackup Job, ....)
- backup server console --> not counted for All-In-One Server
- proxy --> 2GB for each concurrent task (backup/replica jobs)
- repository --> 2GB for each concurrently processed machine disk
- mount server --> 512 MB RAM per guest VM disk on Mount Server + 100MB per VM.
- MSSQL server for config database --> MSSQL Express can take up to 1GB RAM for the veeam database
- Antivirus --> 2 GB memory (depends on the Anti Virus product you use on the mount server)

My calculation for your environment while a single Sure Backup Job with just one VM (2 disks) is running:
- 4.5 GB backup server
- 1.1 GB mount server
- 1 GB MSSQL server
- 2 GB AntiVirus
I'm already at 8.6 GB memory recommendation. And it will be more, if you also have running backup/backup copy jobs or replica jobs.

If you feel some information is missing from the user manual, please let me know. Or use the "Send Feedback" button at the end of the user guide. This will send the feedback directly to the responsible team.

Best,

Well sure, if you put it that way. :D

It wasn't clear to me. I'll just mention to anyone else with this issue, I also needed to bump the processors on the backup server from 4 to 8 before it would run at less than 100%. I'm glad I did all this before purchasing a new server, because I'm going to be extra generous with cores & RAM.
