Surebackup with Veeam Cloud Connect (VCC)

Post by phlight »

Can I create SureBackup jobs with Veeam Cloud Connect and encrypted backups?
-I've talked to a few veeam cloud providers (some of which don't seem to know what Surebackup is) and I've gotten conflicting answers.
Does Veeam Cloud Connect replication encrypt the data at rest at the destination side?

Thanks!

Hi, to your questions:
- no, surebackup is not available to backups stored into Cloud Connect. The reason behind this is that you don't want to waste bandwidth and time to send corrupted backups to VCC. You may run surebakup locally, and then send "good" data to VCC
- no, as hypervisors cannot access virtual machines that are encrypted on disk, so no failover would be possible

We're still not sure how to implement proper testing on the CloudConnect side of things. With StorageCraft we had it auto virtualize at the service provider location for testing.

Not all of the sites we backup have the resources to use SureBackup. We'd really like the ability to boot on the CloudConnect side and use SureBackup there.

As long as backups are not encrypted or you know a corresponding password, you can import those backups to a separate backup console and instantly recover VMs to isolated network, etc.

However, it might be worth communicating to customers that as long as they confirm source backups via Surebackup and occasionally run health check against secondary backups, they should be in a good shape.

Thanks.
