Hello,
Can someone explain the differences between retrying a job and "Sync Now"? Particularly after the job had been failing and now you want to see if it works.

Retries do not affect synchronization interval, "sync now" operation actually starts the new sync.interval immediately which in some cases might cause BCJ start time to schift. For more info please check this article. BTW, what kind of an error did you encounter?
