Veeam configuration backup and SQL server backup

Does the built-in Veeam configuration backup also backup the data stored on the connected SQL server or should the configuration back up run along side native SQL server backups?

The Veeam configuration backup is a comprehensive backup of the Veeam Database in a transportable format. It includes all your job data, catalog session info (tape catalog and backup catalog), job settings, infrastructure settings, etc. Basically, anything in the Veeam Database gets packed into the configuration backup.

What "data stored on the connected SQL server" are you concerned about?

Basically, the Configuration Backup serves as a complete recovery for your Veeam environment if required -- you simply need to restore from the configuration backup on any Veeam server, and it will be the same as before†.

† Of course, if the Veeam Server itself hosted repositories, you will need to make such repositories available on the "new" server also if it's a different one

By "data stored on the connected SQL server" I was referring to what Veeam writes to the SQL server like the catalog. Since the configuration backup contains everything in the Veeam environment, if the SQL server, which is not running on the same server as Veeam, were to die, could I use that backup to restore the databases to a new SQL server?

Yep, that's exactly what it's meant for. You even get a step during the backup configuration restore to pick your favorite MSSQL server.

Thanks for the info! We were using native SQL backup to backup the Veeam database but I can turn that off now.
