Veeam Replica Failover for SQL server

Post by tigattack »

Good afternoon,

I'm wondering if VBR is capable of managing replication and failover of the SQL server which hosts its own DB?
I have a VM which hosts a MSSQL database server, which in turn hosts the database for VBR.

I'm aware VBR is capable of replicating it, but will it suffer any issues after failing over to the replica? Would it even be able to initiate the failover to the replica if the original SQL server went offline, or would it just seize up, considering it wouldn't be able to access its DB?

Before anyone suggests it, I've investigated the option of a SQL failover cluster, but that won't work out in my environment. There are a few other alternatives, but currently this is looking like the most simple option if it's possible.

Cheers,
tig.

Hello,

Veeam services will not continue to function if the connection to the original SQL server is lost, therefore failover via Veeam will not be available neither.

I think an existing Veeam instance will be attached to the database running on the replicated SQL server after Veeam services restart: SQL instance name and SQL server name must be the same and Veeam server must be able to see the SQL instance on the replicated server. This utility can be used to connect Veeam to a database on another SQL instance.

This article might be useful for you as well as it contains basic considerations for backing up and replicating the Veeam Server or its database.
And don't forget to protect regularly Veeam database by running configuration backup.

Thanks!
