I have Veeam 9.5.0.1038 and vSphere 6.5.
I backup 20 VMs and most of the time the jobs complete successfully except for two Exchange 2016 servers that are in a DAG. Every now and then I get this warning for one of the Exchange servers:
VSS: Backup job failed. Cannot notify writers about the 'BACKUP FINISH' event. A VSS critical writer has failed. Writer name: [Microsoft Exchange Writer]. Class ID: [{76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7}]. Instance ID: [{e779f6a0-e2ba-4c5b-b306-979746ec7981}]. Writer's state: [VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_BACKUP_COMPLETE]. Error code: [0x800423f3].
I then find that the only way to resolve this is to reboot the Exchange server.
So my questions are:
1) Is there something I can do to stop/prevent this error?
2) If I get this warning does that mean the backup will have issues if I need to restore the Exchange VM?
I should mention that only one of the Exchange servers has the warning at any point in time. I've never had both Exchange servers have the warning status after the backups run.
Is there anything I can do to resolve this issue besides just rebooting? I'm running Exchange 2016 CU6 on Windows Server 2016 Datacenter and am fully patched.
