Need advice to build good B&R server
Hi
Need advice to build good B&R server. Hardware+configuration+ransomware protection.
We have 24 vmware Vms mixed windows linux, two exchange servers, two DCs...
1. Provisioned space to vms around 8.4Tb but real usage is much much lower.
2. Wont be domain member
3. server will be on dedicated vlan with access to only 2 PC and vmware vcenter.
4. backup time mixed: once, once par day and once per month
5. incremental forever
6. from time to time archiving to tape
7. how to configure access right to protect server from ransomware?
8. Do we need full sql server or express will be enough?
List of Vm...
Is it this server parameters ok:
s2012 r2
ssd 120 gb for OS and b&r
4 core x64 intel or amd
32gb ddr4 ram
32tb raid 5...effective space +-20tb
2-4gbps lan card
700w psu witc apc

Hi Daniel!
For 24 VMs provided server capacity should be enough. SQL express will also work fine.
You can find detailed information in Veeam best practices book and system requirements in the corresponding user guide section.
Thanks.

I see your point.
Quick answer is also provided above
Here are some general recommendations regarding ransomware protection:

Feel free to ask additional questions.Gostev wrote:1. Any separate storage device that is not directly write-accessible from compromised servers by industry-standard protocols (SMB, NFS) is "good enough" protection from CryptoLocker. But the storage device should use its own set of credentials (not from local directory, and not local accounts of the storage device). Additionally, you want that storage device located off-site. Cloud Connect service provider is ideal for this, and we actually have a recent success story posted on this forum where Cloud Connect saved the user from CryptoLocker.
2. I personally always recommend using tape whenever possible as the last line of defense. Even if it just a monthly export. Tape is true read-only storage that is also much more reliable than disk. I saw tape backups saving companies from worst disasters so many times... and, I also saw every line of comprehensive disk-based protection strategy failing miserably, leaving users with unrecoverable data loss.

Now only want to know if this server will be good. We can fight with configuration next week.

As I said, the server should work fine.

Re: Need advice to build good B&R server
General recommendation is to have 1 CPU core (physical or virtual) and 4 GB RAM per 10 concurrent running jobs.
So 4 CPUs should be enough for you.

Ok, but is it 8 core with lower ghz per core better than 4 core? Example 8 core x 2.5ghz vs 4 core x 3ghz

Re: Need advice to build good B&R server
In modern days cpu clock doesn't matter too much, while multiple cores can be successfully leveraged by the software when running multiple tasks at the same time.

Luca is right. 8 CPUs x 2.5ghz is better than 4 x 3ghz.

Re: Need advice to build good B&R server
repository will have 36tb usable space in raid50, 12x4tb drives.
is it good to make 4x3hdd in raid 50? want to lower possibility to 2 hdd in same raid group fail.
raid stripe size 256kb, ntfs cluster size 64kb?
single 36tb partition, one repositorty?

Re: Need advice to build good B&R server
For better performance rates usually it is recommended to use RAID 10, please search these forums for more on that. Single repository should be fine, though If you have that option, take a look at Scale-out Backup Repository. This will allow you add more disks/space to the backup repository without interrupting the entire backup process. Thanks!

Our storage is slow, so i will rather have bigger space than speed.

Ok, in any case once you set this up, check out the bottleneck stats for the backup job. It will indicate the component that should be upgraded in the first place for better job performance rates.

Ok, given the stats below, you should be looking at upgrading source/production storage.

Yes...but everyday incremental time is 1 hour so no big deal..transfer is about 50mb/s

Re: Need advice to build good B&R server
ok
hardware is completed...
raid 6 vs raid 50 for 12 4tb show this, mb/s:
raid 6/raid 50
r-w/r-w
seq q32t1 1697-95/1677-208
4k q32t1 34-5.4/50-5.4
seq 1424-62/1400-62
4k 3.8-0.8/4.5-0.8
as my storage is slow write speed is not concern.
I think that raid 6 is better solution because ANY of two hdd can fail and raid will be ok...raid 50 have much better write but if two disk go bad in same strip sub array entire raid will go down.
several questions:
strip size, 256kb or 512kb?
enable or disable write cache on controler? wont have baterry but we have ups and gen set.

Hi Daniel,
There are existing topics that should clarify your questions, please take a look > RAID6 or RAID10?, How to speed up a Proxy server? and Is my backup speed as expected?
Thanks!
