B&R 9.5 to 11.x with vCenter 6.5 to 7.x
Hi
I have to update my whole Cluster including Veeam Backup and Replication.
my Cluster is running on vSphere 6.5 and Veeam is running 9.5.0.1536.
I didnt find a complete manual how to do that the right way.
I found out that i need to install several Versions of Veeam before i can go forward to the latest Version.
first Update Version is VeeamBackup&Replication_9.5.4.2866.Update4b_20191210
after that i need to install VeeamBackup&Replication_10.0.1.4854_20220304
and after that i can go forward with VeeamBackup&Replication_11.0.1.1261_20220302
is this right?
and also, first step is updating the vSphere things, do you think there can be some issues with Veeam and how can i provent them ?
Thanks
BR,
Manuel

Hello nxManolo,
You may go straight to V10a from your current version and then upgrade to V11a. Here you can find the latest 11a ISO with the latest cumulative patch which you may use for upgrading from V10a or 9.5U4b - this is up to you. I would also recommend upgrading VBR before the virtual environment. This way you can be sure that your virtual environment is supported, in case you decide to upgrade it to vSphere 7.
Thanks

Hi wishr,
In your V10a link is no downloadable .iso
(it says This update has been superseded by Veeam Backup & Replication 10a Cumulative Patch 20201202.)
and yes, i will install vSphere 7 (last version)
Thanks,
BR

You can update your installation to this 10a build first and update it to the latest version of 11a. Both KB articles have download links. Thanks!

Hello,
You may go through the links and take the latest v10a build. I linked the KB articles just so it would be easier to navigate between versions and track the upgrades compatibility.
Thanks

Thanks for the links!
Also do you think there´s something else i should consider before updating (also vSphere updating, something like the certificates)
If i´m updating should my configured backup tasks all work after updating VBR and after vSphere?
Thanks

Yes, I would definitely suggest a few things to do on the VBR side:
1. Upgrade VBR before vSphere.
2. Disable the jobs before upgrading VBR.
3. Take a configuration backup after each VBR upgrade, assuming you have it for the current version, just in case.

Ok, thanks,
But why you would suggest to update VBR first? Because if something goes wrong i have no Backup?

You will always be able to restore from backups created by a previous version - this is one of the key concepts of VBR. The reason I'm suggesting to upgrade VBR first is simple. This way, when you finish off upgrading to vSphere v7, it will work seamlessly and none of the underlying infrastructure checks we have will fail. It's not the most important aspect, but I would follow this way.
Thanks

This is the primary reason why you need an actual configuration backup. In the worst case scenario you may spin up a fresh VBR server, restore the config. data from the configuration backup and start performing restores.
