[V13] Adding Enterprise manager to managed server list in Veeam B&R

Post by ashleyw »

Hi,
I've just deployed Enterprise Manager using the appliance method - all went as expected.
After I had deployed it, I thought it would be my natural assumption that I should be able to add the Enterprise managed appliance to the list of managed servers in the Veeam B&R.
I then enable remote access to Enterprise appliance and approve that while wearing my VeeamSO hat.
I then add a new server to the B&R console managed server list for the Enterprise manager appliance, I get a message saying;

Failed to connect to deployer service, host 'a.b.c.d', port '6160' Failed to check deployer service compatibility. Unable to establish connection: timeout reached. Failed to connect to a.b.c.d:6160: connection timed out.

so what is the correct process to add the enterprise manager appliance to the managed server list on the B&R appliance?
I want to be able to manage updates to all the appliances from one place.

cheers
Ashley

Hi Ashley

I believe thats currently not a supported scenario. But let me double check internally and provide you with an update.

For sure the above is not going to happen in principle because it makes no sense from product design perspective. Remember the reason why EM was created in the first place was to manage multiple backup servers, not the other way around. Therefore the direction of travel is EM becoming the update repository for all managed VSAs in environments with multiple VSAs, so that there's no need to poke a hole in the firewall for each or to have 100 VSAs download the same bits 100 times.

Thanks guys, so I've only briefly looked at EM because I still need to dial it into Saml tomorrow but is there no single federated view anywhere of all servers that make up a veam management plane including the EM for updates in much the same as the managed hosts view at the b&r level is? We are just experimenting with EM currently to see if there are any new features beyond self service that make it compelling for us.
Thanks

No new features or anything particularly useful except above-mentioned self-service portals, plus basic centralized monitoring and license management across multiple backup servers.
