Moving SOBR performance tier from NAS to local S3

Post by SirVsALot »

Hi,

I currently have a SOBR setup where the performance tier is a local NAS, and the capacity tier is Wasabi.

I now have a local S3 object storage unit (Ootbi) that I want to move the performance tier backups to.

Is there a way to update the SOBR config to use the local S3 object storage for the performance tier, while maintaining the existing backup chain and backups on the Wasabi capacity tier? If I try to add the local S3 storage to the SOBR, I (predictably) get an error about mixing block and file storage, so I can't just add the new storage and evactuate from the old extent.

Is it possible to add the new S3 storage to the existing SOBR config, or do I need to build a new SOBR and startover from scratch? Any thoughts on the best route to take?

Hi SirVsALot,

Here’s what worked for me:

1.) Remove the Capacity Tier from the original SOBR.
2.) Create a new SOBR with the new Performance Tier and reattach your original Capacity Tier (backups from the Capacity Tier will be imported).
3.) Edit your backup job to use the new SOBR and map it to the imported backup files.
4.) Run an Active Full backup of your job.

While the job performs a new Active Full backup, offloads to the Capacity Tier will remain incremental.
If you prefer to avoid an Active Full, you could download all backups from the Capacity Tier, though that’s maybe not a great idea depending on the amount of backup data you have.

Backups on the local NAS will be removed by the background retention job over time.

Best,
