Need advice on second Veeam 13 instance for DR

Post by m.costantino »

Hi everyone,
on a production ESXi server I’m running Veeam 13 and everything works fine. I’d like to set up a second Veeam 13 instance on another host and keep that VM powered off (the idea is to turn it on only in case of a disaster).

I’ve got a few questions:

If the second VM stays powered off, will I run into any licensing issues?

On the secondary backup VM, would it be enough to just power it on and import the Veeam configuration backup?

Any other suggestions or best practices?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Hi Michele,

Correct, but licensing is based on workload protection, not on active Veeam backup servers, so it would be more a matter of "are you protecting additional workloads?" rather than is another backup server present.

The model you're describing has been pretty common, keeping a standby backup server and restoring configuration backup to it.

In v13.0.1, we introduce High Availability for the Veeam Software Appliance which will allow for a hot / cool deployment with two nodes, and the backup server configuration data is synced automatically between the nodes, simplifying recovery should one of the nodes experience issues.

Thank you David.
Will the High Avalability be available for Enterprise Plus edition too?
