Policy Protection Settings Azure Files

Post by tm67 »

Hello
On this helpcenter page, Gold/Silver/Bronze is described. https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vdc/u ... s_sla.html
On the screenshot there is "Bronze: Create 1 snapshots per day, Keep 8 snapshots". This is not the same as in the text "Bronze — select this option if you want to create snapshots once per day and keep them for 7 days". 8 Snapshots would be 8 days I assume?
Additionally, in my own VDC Azure console. Silver is described as "Create 3 snapshots per day, Keep 4 snapshots". And Gold "Create 24 snapshots per day, Keep 24 snapshots"
But this does not align with the helpcenter article mentioned. Or it is a bit confusing..
Also: in my classic "Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure", we do have the option to schedule daily, weekly and monthly and this way we can also schedule "Configure retention settings for monthly restore points created by the policy." and keep those monthlys for a few months. (Described here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbazu ... ml?ver=8.1)
Does this mean that in VDC, we can keep the snapshots for a maximum of 8 days (or 7?)

Hi Timo,

You are right about the confusion of the text. We will adjust the text for in VDC as the logic is correctly explained in our userguide.

Gold: 24 snapshots are made and 24 are stored (so that aligns with every hour and store them for 1 day)
Silver: 3 are made per day and 4 are stored (every 8 hours and by storing 4, it covers 1 full day to ensure we have a full day)
Bronze: 1 is made per day and 8 are also stored (this is also to cover 1 week) - we'll clarify that in the user guide as it's rotated out.

It would be good to share your company requirements so we can review our templates and adjust where needed.

Hi Niels, thanks.
In SQL and VM protection, Gold has a longer retention than Bronze. So it would also make sense to have the option to store longer than 1 week.
Gold in VM protection, for example, has 24 months. So I don't understand why Azure Files should only have one day..?
To be honest, the best thing would be that the customer can decide what to protect for how long. Maybe Veeam provides some examples with this Bronze, Silver, and Gold, but the customer can decide at the end.
Not sure if this is not what Veeam wants or if there are technical limitations?
But I think at least a couple of months should be possible for retention settings.

Hi Niels,

I too have a question on VDC for Azure Files. When will the Gold/Silver/Bronze be customizable to fit our needs? Or be able to create custom SLA Policy Protection Settings? Specifically, I would like to be able to have 2 snapshots per day at 12pm and 6pm. Then I want to keep snapshots for 1 month. At the end of the month I want to keep one snapshot as a backup on a month to month rotation. This means at the end of every month I have a full backup of the snapshot.

Does Veeam have a roadmap for future settings/options for its customers?

Joe
