Feature Request: VDC for M365 backup and restore Online Archive Mailbox
After VDC for M365 migrated to use Graph API,
"Archive mailboxes are not supported. Backup jobs will complete successfully, but archive data will be skipped."
https://www.veeam.com/kb4820#:~:text=th ... 0are%20not
The reason that our University choose VDC for M365 was the ability to backup and restore Online Archive Mailbox.
Due to M365 Storage limitation, we need to enable Online Archive for all our users and it is vital that we are able to backup both Primary and Online Archive mailbox.
So please implement the function to backup Archive Mailbox.
Regards.

Re: Feature Request: VDC for M365 backup and restore Online Archive Mailbox
Hi Matthew,
It should be noted that this will be taking effect after the migration from EWS to Graph API, and doesn't affect backups taken with EWS. The limitation is in Microsoft's API itself, as Microsoft have documented here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/excha ... nge-online. This is a list of Microsoft acknowledged limitations that as per the article, they are intending to reintroduce APIs for in the future.
Until Microsoft replicate the currently utilised functionality within the Graph API, we'll be unable to offer such a feature.

Microsoft suggests mailbox import and export APIs.
=====
For now, the mailbox import and export APIs in Microsoft Graph let your application import and export contents from Exchange Online primary shared, and archive mailboxes.
We strongly recommend to refer the document:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/graph ... t-overview
=====
Not sure if VDC for M365 can implement this.
Regards.

Hi Matthew,
Veeam will not switch to Graph APIs in scenarios where current functionality would be lost. Archive mailboxes will continue to be protected via EWS until Graph API support becomes available.
Thanks

Sadly, it was switched from EWS to Graph API.
Our VDC for M365 portal asked us to "Reauthorize existing app registration" before 1 July 2026 and we did.
We have requested to roll back and Veeam said that it cannot be done.

The switch has not happened and will not happen any time soon.
In the notification, we provided the expected deadline from Microsoft, and about a week later Microsoft announced that they're postponing the deadline to October 1st.
You reauthorized your VDC app and it now has all the permissions which further on will still be required for Graph APIs. They are not used yet, but will be used at some point anyway. Now it just means that you're proactively prepared for the change.
Please, don't worry, all your data is still protected, including archive mailboxes.
