Clarification on Deletion of RMAN Plug-in Backup Data from VBR Repository

Post by rin »

Hi,

I would like to confirm the handling of backup data created via the Veeam Plug-in for Oracle RMAN.

In my case:
- Oracle RMAN full backups are taken on a monthly basis.
- The backups are transferred to and stored in a VBR repository using the Veeam Plug-in for RMAN, which is used as a backup storage repository in this environment.
- These backups are no longer managed/recognized on the RMAN side (i.e., they are no longer registered in RMAN).
- However, the backup files still remain physically on the VBR repository.

In this scenario, can I delete such backup data from the VBR console (e.g., via "Delete from disk")?

Thanks,
Rin

Hello,

Yes, the option "Delete from disk" initiates the physical deletion of data from the repository file system. However, the RMAN plug-in has a special mechanism that enables the forced deletion of such "orphaned" files, this option is called: -set-force-delete, please refer to this page for more information.

Note that the specified period MUST exceed the retention parameter to avoid the accidental deletion of relevant data. For example, if your regular retention policy is 7 days, then the --set-force-delete period should be at least 14 days.

Thanks!
