S3 max immutability period

Post by mamosorre84 »

Hi all,

we have a VBR 12.3, for a regulatory compliance purpose we must configure immutability up to 10 years.

The direct target is an Amazon S3 bucket.

Is it possible to achieve that?

I know with Set-VBRAmazonS3Repository powershell command it is possible to configure up to 999 days.

We also tried "HardenedRepositoryMaxImmutabilityDays" registry key, with no success.

Can you confirm it is not possible to go beyond that value with v12?

Thanks

Hi Marco,

You can configure GFS restore points. GFS restore points are made immutable for their entire time in v12.*. However, short-term restore points are limited to 999 days.

V13.* will allow you to keep daily restore points for longer than 999 days by selecting "For the entire duration of their retention policy". You could in theory configure 9999 days (short term retention), and restore points will be set immutable for 9999 days.
Please keep in mind that long retention on Amazon S3 can become very expensive. Have you considered moving the GFS backups to Amazon S3 Glacier for long-term archival?
