unable to select export server

Post by sable300 »

I'm not able to select a server to export a virtual disk to.

I couldn't find any documentation, that specifies what kind of server so configure. I tried adding "Managed Servers" and "Backup Repositories" but neither shows up.

Since I literally use B&R only for exporting backups made with VAW, is there an other option for exporting backups as virtual disk?

Hi Lucas,

As documented in our Help Center, you cannot select the backup server as the target (assuming you’re using v13).

Please add any machine in your network as a managed server and use it as the target for the export.

Can we please have this functionality restored in the next V13 update?
It really is quite annoying not being able to export disks from a backup in SMB environments particularly.

It should not matter if the restore is being done locally to a data path, the backup server itself or to another server - you should always be able to export data when and where required. (and saying for 'security reasons' is not a valid reason to reduce existing functionality)

Hi Dion

Unlikely, since the next version is feature complete and will be released soon.
No additional functionality will be added at this time.

I can't promise if it will come back, but your feedback is noted.

Hi,

(sorry for being a bit vocal about this)

I just came across this during our yearly desaster recovery exercise. I had a serious WTF moment. Resource scarcity is a real thing during desaster recovery - now I need to provide a second box just to export some critical VMDK-files from the backups is just rediculous. Does anyone think about consequences of such major changes and does not even include a switch that reenables that functionality at the discretion of the client?

Hi Dark-Sider,

I understand the frustration, but I don't have any news yet.
That said, you don’t necessarily need another “box.” You can add any Windows or Linux Server (virtual/physical) as a managed server to your backup server and export the VMDKs to that machine.

Another workaround to try is our Extract Utility. It can also export VM files from VM backup files to a local disk. No need to use additional machines.
