Veeam Infrastructure Appliance: Capacity expansion
Hello all
I have a question regarding expanding the capacity of a Veeam Infrastructure Appliance (repository).
I found a Q&A for Veeam Infrastructure Appliance viewtopic.php?f=2&t=100070&start=0 and have a question about expanding its capacity.
Has anything changed in that regard? According to that Q&A, it wasn’t possible at the time to expand the capacity within a single server. Is that on the roadmap?
From my perspective, there are two options for capacity expansion.
First: If I have an HPE Alletra 4120 equipped with 12 LFF disks and configure a RAID 6 array with those disks, I could install additional disks in the server and expand the RAID. After that, however, I’d need to be able to expand the partition and the file system. As I understand it, that’s not currently supported.
Second: If I install another 12 disks and create a new RAID6 with them? Is there a way to create the partition and the file system and then incorporate it into a SOBR?
Or do you see another option?
We currently have a customer who needs to procure a new server. However, this server needs to be expandable in the future.
Thanks
Patrick

Re: Veeam Infrastructure Appliance: Capacity expansion
Hi Patrick
Storage Management for our appliances is part of our upcoming version 13.1.
In v13.0, you will need to deploy a new Infrastructure Appliance for the new disks. There are unsupported ways in v13.0 to extend backup storage, but I strongly recommend to wait for the v13.1 release if you need to extend today.
Best,
Fabian

Re: Veeam Infrastructure Appliance: Capacity expansion
Will it be possible to expand a VHR with 13.01 After the Upgrade to 13.1 or do we have the rebuild it?

Hi Chaos,
I double-checked with my colleagues.
Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1 will allow you to mount new disks as new storage. With this new storage, you can configure a second backup repository on the same appliance. However, expanding existing storage with new disks is not included in v13.1 yet.
Best,
Fabian

Hi Fabian,
Not the answer I hoped for, but at least an answer we can work with.

Hi Fabian,
can we expect the XFS disk expansion feature in an upcoming VIA release?
We're deploying the appliance today
Thank you!

Re: Veeam Infrastructure Appliance: Capacity expansion
Hello,
The feature to extend existing XFS volumes is currently on our product roadmap, and we are targeting delivery by the end of this year.
In the meantime, as Fabian mentioned, the recommended approach to increase appliance storage capacity in v13.1 is to add additional local or network-attached storage (iSCSI/FC) and use it as a dedicated repository or to configure it as an extent within the Scale-Out Repository.
