Backup policies, best approach / practices

Good morning,

I currently have an initial policy setup targeting a dynamic Entra group for our employees. With this policy I'm backing up mailbox, onedrive and sharepoint.

I began creating another policy which I plan for Sharepoint sites and Teams, however I'd like to see if there is a better approach. I saw I can use partial organization and choose 'sites' and 'teams', but if I were to choose sites would this encompass all sites including personal ones? Will VDC deduplicate these backups if it does include personal site or would the other option be to just exclude personal sites?

My goal is to really future proof the policy to where it will pickup any new SP sites, not necessarily personal sites since that's being covered by my original policy.

I'm curious how everyone else approaches their policies and what your strategies are...if your able to share that is.

Hi Sean,

Am I correct that you're using VDC M365 and not Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365?

In VDC, if you create a 'partial organization' policy for sites, by default, all sites will be protected, including personal sites. If you want to opt them out, you need to add those to policy exclusions (there's a special filter for personal sites). Configured this way, such a policy will protect all existing non-personal sites and automatically add to protection all the new sites.

Yes I did consider this, however if I were to exclude the personal sites on this policy, wouldn't I need to constantly exclude a new personal site that is detected?

So I have partial org setup with 'sites' and I can exclude and check box all personal sites, but that feature wouldn't update automatically would it? Like if additional new employees are onboarded I would have to keep going into this policy and excluding them?

It works automatically and filters out the newly created personal sites on each policy run.
