Veeam 13.1 + HPE StoreOnce 3660 - No Health Check

Post by Julien.Bastiaens »

Hello Veeam Community (case #08208773) , [Moderator: Replaced Support Id with Case Number]

I am looking for guidance and recommendations regarding a situation we are facing after reviewing the Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1 release notes.

Environment
  • Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1 (planned upgrade)
  • Nutanix AHV workloads
  • HPE StoreOnce 3660 repository
  • StoreOnce version 4.3.13-2608.21
  • The appliance cannot be upgraded to StoreOnce 5.2 or later
Issue

According to the Veeam 13.1 release notes, repositories running HPE StoreOnce versions lower than 5.2 do not support the BLAKE3 hashing algorithm, resulting in Health Check operations being skipped.

As confirmed by Veeam Support, there is currently no fallback mechanism allowing Health Check to use another hashing algorithm on older StoreOnce appliances.

This creates a significant challenge for us because:
  1. Health Check can no longer be used to validate backup integrity.
  2. SureBackup is still not supported for Nutanix AHV workloads.
  3. We are therefore losing two important automated validation mechanisms.
  4. This makes backup verification and compliance requirements, including NIS2 expectations regarding recovery testing and backup validation, much more difficult to address.
Our Concern

The official recommendations appear to be:
  • Perform periodic restore tests (we have a large number of VMs, so this is not really a practical option).
  • Maintain a secondary copy on another repository type that supports Health Check.
  • Use SureBackup where supported.
While technically valid, implementing an additional Linux Hardened Repository and Backup Copy Jobs solely to restore Health Check functionality would introduce:
  • Additional storage requirements
  • Additional server load
  • Additional backup processing
  • Increased network traffic
  • Additional operational complexity
For a large production environment, this does not appear to be a lightweight or cost-effective workaround.

Questions

For organizations running Nutanix AHV together with older HPE StoreOnce 3660:
  1. How are you validating backup integrity after upgrading to Veeam 13.1?
  2. Have you implemented alternative automated verification methods?
  3. Are there any recommended best practices from Veeam Engineering or Product Management for this scenario?
  4. Is there any roadmap information regarding alternative Health Check mechanisms for repositories that do not support BLAKE3?
  5. How are other customers satisfying compliance and audit requirements when Health Check is unavailable?
We would greatly appreciate any feedback, experience, or recommendations from the community or the Veeam product team.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Kind regards,

Hi Julien,

Thanks for the details, and sorry for the challenge.

Indeed, this limitation is due to lack of BLAKE3 support on the Storeonce on older firmwares.

We are hoping new Nutanix APIs will help expedite SureBackup for Nutanix, but point more is that we're aware of the request for Nutanix, but nothing more to share on timelines at this moment.

You might try your hand at a community made tool that purports to meet this need: https://github.com/mikewizzz/veeam-powe ... SureBackup
Note that this is not an official Veeam tool, so no support is provided for it. I would review the scripts and test before trying to implement widely.

Let's see what others can share regarding their solution for this situation.
