Restore an old Exchange data from a Tape

Post by GianlucaCroci »

Veeam Situation
Version 12.3 with off-domain virtual servers.

Task to be done
Recover a Mailbox from a 2020 month-end backup saved to Tapes (would like a PST).
The mailbox was on an old Exchange server (physical server) that no longer exists, and was saved using Veeam Agent.
When the backups were online, we had already performed successful recoveries.

Task done and problem
The VBK file was extracted from the Tape and saved to external storage (a 3 TB file).
Even though a Rescan of the repository was performed, it was not visible in the "Home"-"Backups" section.
Used the Extract utility, which exported several files without extensions. Some were a few KB and others were several TB. It also extracted the "VeeamRecoveryMedia.zip" file.
In Veeam, if I use "Files," I can see them, but I can't do anything.

How can I properly open the backup recovered from the Tape and retrieve the PST?

I also added the various credentials in "Credential Manager" on the Veeam server (Windows).

Thanks in advance for suggestions
Best regards

Hi Gianluca,

Can you confirm which option you used on this step?

To Repository or To Server?

To Server places the backup file on the target server, but the backup is not imported into Veeam. You need to import the backup first. Rescan will not automatically find this file because rescan looks for VBM files, and the backups on tape don't have a VBM.

Once imported, you will be able to do restore operations.

Hello David,
I use REPOSITORY.
it's not the first time that I do this operation.
I've dont the same Restore but it was from a Tape of December 2025, and saved into the same Repository of the 2020, and now I've it into the "Disk (Imported)" and I can Browse the restore with the "Veeam Exchange Explorer".

Done few time a RESCAN.
I've copied the backup file into another Repository, and Rescanned too, but I can't see it.

The only way that I see the files is when I use "Files"

Aha, the rescan won't grab it like I told, Rescan expects VBM file

But restore To Repository option should be importing it automatically for you, that doesn't sound expected. Please open a Support Case and let Support review the logs to understand what happened here. (use the 3rd option to export from hosts, export from the Backup Server itself)
