Smartest approach to gather statistics needed for the Veeam Calculator Object Storage/VDC Vault Sizing ?

Hello experts and good day,

when performing Veeam Calculator Object Storage/VDC Vault, I find that the most time-consuming part of the activity is extracting the statistical data related to the Full Backup size and Change Rate of the various VMs from the existing Veeam Backup Servers. Needless to say, the effort required increases significantly as the number of VMs grows, particularly when they are spread across several primary Backup Jobs containing only a few VMs each (a configuration that I frequently encounter across many Veeam Backup Servers).

Could you please advise on what approach/tool Veeam recommends in these scenarios to facilitate and streamline the process of extracting the required statistical data?

For example, I was considering the possibility of extracting the required information using the Veeam ONE report called “Data Change Rate History”, although this may of course require the use of a helper Veeam ONE server when Veeam ONE is not already available in the environment.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Since you don't want to use Veeam One, I would try to retrieve backup session statistics (maybe with PowerShell) and do some calculation from there.

I suggest to give Veeam One a try, especially if you have VMware or HyperV. Maybe your customer start seeing benefits of other Veeam One reports, which will allow you to provide more managed Services to them.

hope you're doing great and thank you very much for your reply.

I would like to elaborate more on this as it's not that we don't want to use Veeam One, it's more that some (lazy) IT admins that are not already using Veeam ONE may not like the idea of having to deploy a helper Veeam ONE server and connect their Veeam Backup & Replication server (although temporarily) for the sole purpose of extracting the required statistical data needed for the Veeam Calculator Object Storage/VDC Vault sizing.

I personally love Veeam ONE and I consider it a more reliable and straightforward approach using a solid tool compared to retrieving the same backup session statistics using PowerShell and then do some calculation from there. At the same time, I fully agree that it is definitely worth giving Veeam One a try in order for us to have the opportunity to provide more managed services to the customers.

Do you confirm that the preconfigured Veeam ONE report called “Data Change Rate History” with the option to calculate change rate in the report based on Data transferred is the most appropriate is the most appropriate for this use case ?

It’s a community project for getting information from VBR to make things like sizing easier.
It will pull out the source size of all workloads at a per job level, as well as show the change rate of a job and the average and max backup size for a job.

I use it all the time for sizing activities.

I’ve linked the preview build as it has a number of fixes and new features in it, which haven’t made it into the GA release yet (Because I’ve got a couple more features I want to add before the next release)
