Veeam backup for oracle PCA (OVM) Workloads

Hi Team ,

I have a customer using an Oracle Private Cloud Appliance (PCA) that hosts OVM virtual machines running both Windows and Linux.

As I understand it, Veeam does not provide hypervisor-level backup support for OVM, so these workloads need to be protected using Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows or Veeam Agent for Linux.

Could you please clarify the following:

1. When using Veeam Agent to protect these OVM virtual machines, can the backups be stored directly in an on-premises Veeam Backup Repository managed by Veeam Backup & Replication?
2. Are there any limitations or specific considerations when backing up and restoring OVM workloads using Veeam Agent?
3. What is the recommended best-practice architecture for protecting these workloads?
4. For the Linux OVM virtual machines, does Veeam Agent for Linux support Fedora Linux v32?

Hi Lochana,

I moved your topic from the “Veeam Data Cloud” forum to the “Managed Agents” forum, since your question is not related to the "Veeam Data Cloud" service.

1.) Yes. Make sure you have a VPN or direct connection between the agents and the backup server. NAT is not supported.

2.) Bare Metal Recovery with our Recovery Media is possible if Oracle Private Cloud Appliance allows you to boot from an ISO image. Since v13.1, it is also possible to boot a Windows machine into recovery mode from the Virtual Recovery Partition. I strongly recommend testing this in your environment.

3.) I would start with the Best Practice Guide. It is still for v12, but valid also for v13. An update to v13 is expected in the next few months.

4.) Fedora is not on the list of supported operating systems (Help Center).

Hi Fabian,

Thank you for your reply. I understand that Fedora is not officially supported by the Veeam Agent for Linux. However, if I install the Veeam nosnap service on Fedora (yum install veeam-nosnap), will I be able to run backups using this service?

Additionally, regarding Bare Metal Recovery (BMR), does the recovery VM's disk size need to be exactly identical to the original VM's disk size? Could you also clarify any other limitations for BMR when using Oracle PCA?

Hi Lochana,

Regarding point 1, it will not be supported. We removed Fedora support starting with version 13.
Also, we only test and can provide support statements for platforms and operating systems we have validated. Feel free to try it, but there is no guarantee from Veeam. But you may try Veeam Agent v6.x, which supported Fedora 36, 37, 38 and 39. Agent v6.x can still be managed by Veeam Backup & Replication v13.*, as long the agent job/policy does not use any new functionality from v13.*.

Regarding the disk size: the target volume must have the same size as the volume you want to restore. Resizing volumes during Bare Metal Recovery is currently an open feature request.

Could you also clarify any other limitations for BMR when using Oracle PCA?

Unfortunately not, since we have not tested this hypervisor/platform with our Agents.
