CBT and backup speed

Hi,

Since last week, I moved my backup agent and server from a network to an other network.
Bur the new network impose to have bandwidth restriction.

So, for this week-end, I set a very low bandwidth : 100 Mbps and today, I set to 200 Mbps
But, before the restriction, the backup job between agent and the B&R server (V12) taken 30 minutes.
While the week-end : took 4 hours and I estimate that the backup with 200 Mpbs bandwitdh will take 2 hours.

I think that's not enough and I also know that I will add data on the folder who are saved by VEEAM.
This folder contain data come from Oracle server (rman files) or mysql dump file.

I don't backup directly from oracle server because there are no compatible agent for Oracle Enterprise Linux.

Oracle server --> FTP --> folder
Each day at 6pm, content of the folder are cleanup for permit to new data to come from oracle server.
And in same time the backup start of my oracle server (rman backup take manu hours to run because big database).

So, here, I would to try to improve the delay of backup by trying to reduce other parameter of backup like disk I/O.
So, is CBT can lower the time for backup data or not

Hi Cormansa,

In general, Changed Block Tracking helps Veeam Agent with incremental and synthetic full backups. Veeam Agent only has to read the changed blocks between two backup sessions to identify what is new, instead of reading the entire source disk. So it can help if only part of the data changes. If you change the entire content of a disk (all data blocks), then Change Block Tracking won't have much effect.

Regarding support for “Oracle Enterprise Linux”: a quick check tells me that Oracle renamed it to “Oracle Linux” years ago (around 2010). Oracle Linux is supported by Veeam Agent for Linux (Help Center).

I'm not talking about performance issue, it's not the case.
I'm talking about finding some improvement on the windows agent for compensate the network bandwidth restriction.

But, if CBT driver not help to improve that because the content is cleared each time, you answered to my question.

Can you clarify what you are doing? You have a Oracle Linux system, but you use Veeam Agent for Windows? Is the FTP Server on a Windows Server?

If you use Windows Agent, then our Default CBT mechanism is already active on NTFS volumes. Our own CBT driver can make backups faster, but the same changed blocks still have to be copied over network.

I recommend to give Veeam Agent for Linux a chance on the source system, since I believe you have "Oracle Linux". We support various Oracle Linux versions from 7 to 10. No need to involve a third system. That only doubles network traffic.
