Size of Backup repository

Hello,

i have a question that may have to do with my lack of understanding how V365 really works:

We have only a few users using M365 services. We use Veeam for M365 to create a backup. As far as i understood Veeam will always to only incremental backups after the first backup run. Currently our repository is filled with about 700 GB of data.

Is there a way to do some kind of consistency check that can be used to check if those 700 GB are actually what our M365 user have stored? I always wonder if our users really have so much data in their M365 accounts and wanted to make sure that the backup data in the repository reflects the real data our users store in M365.

Hi mtav,

Storage consumed in a repository is not identical to what you M365 reports. Backups not only include content, but also metadata, and, for instance, multiple item versions are stored separately; and we do not provide any mechanism to track the storage consumption per user (or a mailbox, or a OneDrive, etc.).

You may also see different storage usage depending on the storage type you use (Jet-based vs object storage) because of the way how the backup data is stored and structured. To give an example, when you're using Jet repository, the database doesn't shrink after retention removes old data - it keeps showing it as consumed, but next backup runs reuse the empty segments.
