That's not possible, but you can backup from replica and then use this backup as source for copy job.
Also, you can use backup created by that copy job as a source for replication. Thanks!

Hello Dmitry, can you please explain me a little bit:

If I want to create a weakly full backup on Saturday it is possible to use my daily backup of Friday as source of the backup job for Saturday? It will check the difference with the Friday’s backup and the original VM to create the full backup on Saturday?

Thanks

Hi Ruben, if you mean synthetic full, then it first creates an increment (copies changes occurred inside VM since the last backup to a new incremental restore point) and then synthesizes new full backup based on the previous full and subsequent increments.

Hello foggy, not yet. We have one backup job (JOB 1) on Monday to Friday for daily backups, with 2 retention backups, and we are planning to create another one (JOB 2) on Saturday for weakly backups, with 3 or 4 backups.

As we have our daily backup with full backup on Friday and the backup on Saturday will be full too (we still do not know if it will be synthetic or not) if we can use the full backup of JOB 1 as base of the full backup of JOB 2 it will use less time than creating every Saturday one Full backup.

Does your data change between Friday and Saturday that you need a different full backup?

If not, you can just set up a backup copy job to run on Saturdays to pick up the Friday full backup.

This will be completely different backup chains, so the answer is no. If you want to keep weekly fulls for archival purposes, then backup copy is indeed the right thing to use.

Skrause our data does not change a lot between Friday and Saturday, but we need to keep a weekly backup.

Thanks foggy, that was the doubt that we have as it is going to be 2 different jobs and backup chains. We’ll try with synthetic full backup on the weekly chain to check the backup times.

Thanks

If your data doesn't change and you need to keep weekly fulls, then a Backup Copy job is definitely the best solution.

You can set up a backup copy job pretty easily with GFS to keep however many weekly fulls you want. Set the number of restore points in the copy job to the minimum of 2, tell it to keep however many weekly full restore points on Saturdays you want to keep and have it run every day and you should be golden. It will keep one full chain for the copy job to function, and will synthesize a full weekly and keep those archived points in their own retention.
