Backup from different locations

Hello,

I would like to know the behaviour of Veeam Backup & Replication in following scenario:

Location A: Veeam Backup & Replication server with local storage
Internet speed: 100 Mbps download | 10 Mbps upload

Location B: ESXi server with a few VM's and a NAS for backups
Internet speed: 250 Mbps download | 15 Mbps upload

We want to have backups on 2 locations:
- Location A: VM backups from the ESXi server that is on location B
- Location B: VM backups on the local NAS


If we create a daily backup job on the Veeam server in location A to the local storage and create a backup copy to the NAS in location B, how will this work?

If it's like above. What's the best way to minimize the traffic on the network without setting up another Veeam server?

Data flow for the backup job will be "Datastore(location B) > Backup proxy > Network > Backup repository(local storage, location A)"
You can create a backup proxy in location B, so data will not need to go to location B for the backup job at all. Please also check transport modes.

For backup copy job the data flow will be: Direct mode: "Disk(Location A) > Source backup repository > Network > Target backup repository > Disk(Location B, NAS)", assuming WAN Acceleration is not in use.

It is also explained in FAQ section.

The idea is to make onsite backup on the location B where your ESXi is placed (you need to create backup proxy there) and then backup copy offsite to location A.

Compression and Deduplication happen on Veeam Proxy server.

It doesn`t require storage resources, but because of on-the-fly processing (deduplication and compression) of heavy data streams (hunreds of MB per second) a Proxy shoul have significant CPU, Memory and I/O resources.

Let's say we have 5 ESXi servers in location B, all with local storage.
Will a backup proxy on one of the ESXi servers on location B speed up the backup to location A?
Or do we really have to set up 5 backup proxy servers on each host?

You don`t need to set up a backup proxy for each ESXi of the same location.

Yes it will, since backup proxy performs deduplication and compression, less data will be transferred over the network.

However, as I wrote it`s better to perform onsite backup on location B and then backup copy to location A. Please read and article about best practices. Thanks.
