Citrix MCS and VMware CBT (Case ID 04050978)

Post by FXE »

Hi all,

I hope you and your family are healthy !

I'm facing an issue about a backup job for 2 VMs which are used for Citrix Machine Creation Service. Veeam B&R reports warning message for these 2 VMs : "Changed block tracking cannot be enabled: one or more snapshots present".

I've opened a case about that and support team advises me to create a separate job for these 2 VMs.
I would to know if this is really the best way and if someone has already experienced this situation.

Thank you.
Be strong and healthy !

I do not know the MCS well. Are the Snapshot mandatory or are they just created from you temporary.

If they are not cirtical you could remove them and then enable CBT by running a Veeam Job with the VM running.

Otherwise you could create a separate Job and disable CBT in the settings.

Overall this is a vmware limitation with the way CBT can be enabled.

Hi Andreas and thank you for your answer.

Citrix MCS is based on snapshots for XenDesktop VMs deployment. So they are mandatory.

But I will be very interested about how other Citrix MCS admins deal with this.

Hello,

The warning says that we couldn't get a list of changed blocks from VMware vSphere CBT but in this case Veeam fails over to its proprietary block filtering mechanism.
Therefore, the only impact of inability to use VMware CBT is an increased duration of incremental run.

But if the duration of incremental run did not exceed your backup window, one of the easiest solutions would be to simply ignore the warning:)

Thanks!

Hello PetrM and thank you for your answer.

The backup for these 2 VMs is about 6 minutes, so it's not a pain !
So OK to ignore these warnings if it's not "disaggregating" for the backup. Is it possible to exclude these warnings for these 2 VMs ?

Thank you.

You can create a backup job only for this vms and disable cbt in the job settings.

Thank you Mildur.

I've isolated these 2 VMs in a brand new job without CBT.

Thank you for all your help.
Hope you and family be healthy !
