Concurrent disk migrations for Instant Recovery

Post by gtelnet »

Ran an IR today for an agent based backup that has multiple disks, and during the Migrate to Production phase, I noticed that it will only migrate one disk at a time. i.e. disk 2 doesn't start migrating until disk 1 completes and disk 3 doesn't start migrating until disk 2 completes, and so on. I also saw that the progress window doesn't even show there are multiple disks until it finishes migrating the current disk. i.e. while disk 1 is restoring, the windows doesn't show disk 2, 3, etc. Disk 2 then appears when disk 1 completes and so on.

The target is ESXi using a linux proxy set to 8 concurrent tasks and the above Migrate to Production is the only job running. The migration job shows it's using hotadd for source proxy and nfs for target proxy.

The job is working fine so didn't open a support ticket, but it could complete much faster if it concurrently migrated the disks the way Veeam concurrently restores VM backups that have multiple disks. Is it by design that the IR migrate must process the disks sequentially? Or perhaps there's a regkey to force it to process them concurrently? Thank you!

You are correct — it's the expected behavior for disks to be processed sequentially during quick migration. And there is no registry key to change this behavior. Thanks!

Thanks, Veremin! Would concurrent disk migrations be something that would be technically possible via a code change? If so, I'll submit a feature enhancement request. This feature would shave MANY hours off IR migrations that are done over the WAN from object storage to another site and dramatically improve the RTO for those customers. Thanks!

Technically, of course, anything is possible. However, now it's unclear how much effort this enhancement would require and how the request will rank among other higher-priority demands.

For now, we've logged this feature in our tracking system to ensure it doesn't get lost in the forum discussions, but we cannot guarantee if or when it will be implemented.

Thanks.
