Dead vCenter Appliance

Post by mythumbsclick »

Hi

I have a vCenter Appliance controlling 2 physical ESXI hosts. Veeam backup infrastructure looked at vCenter for VMs and all was working well until the vCenter Appliance died. It resided on a third host which crashed recently and the appliance corrupted. I raised this issue (in the context of Veeam) with support (00935183) who advised me I could add the hosts in directly into Veeam but I would have to create new fulls and lose my previous backup history/chains. I wanted to find out if its possible that I build a new vCenter appliance with same settings etc would Veeam be able to recognise that as though it were the original vCenter.I have tried exporting the database etc in the dead vCenter Appliance but it seems too far gone to do anything with and annoyingly I didn't have a backup.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hello,

The only way to preserve your current job configuration is to re-use your previous vCenter Server database. If you change the database, all VMs will be assigned new IDs from the vCenter Server. Here is an existing topic about this > Moving VMs to a new virtual center.

Thank you!

Just to update this topic - our support team now has a tool that can replace moref IDs for backed up/replicated VMs in our database, so that you don't need to run active full backup when changing vCenter Server database. Here is a bit more info about this > VM moved to new vCenter

Interesting! Will this work if I go from vCenter to host without vCenter?

This scenario should also be supported.
