General questions

Post by andreas2012 »

Hi,

Have some questions around V&B...

1. Should the Veeam Backup Server and each VM Proxy be on the same network as ESXi hosts and vCenter ? If the ESXi and vCenter is on seperate network, which should it then be on ?
2. If we have a production storage that is connected with FC, the storage repository only support CIFS, the V&B server is a VM, can we then implement direct SAN access ?
3. If we have a production storage that is connected with iSCSI, the storage repository only support CIFS, the V&B server is a VM, can we then implement direct SAN access ?
4. I can see from the documentation

"Direct SAN iSCSI could be done within a VM if you connect the VM to the iSCSI network and assign the VMFS volume to the in-guest iSCSI software controller. Before assigning the VMFS volumes to a proxy server, install the backup software or proxy role to that server first."

Could someone please explain a bit more, im not sure how.... does it mean that "within a VM" does it mean the VM that has the V&B role, or V&B proxy role ? And "connect the VM to the iSCSI network" does it mean that it should have a second nic since the VM is already on the network with ESXi hosts /vc...

Thanks for answers...

Hi,

You need both.
If we have a production storage that is connected with FC, the storage repository only support CIFS, the V&B server is a VM, can we then implement direct SAN access ?
Yes, you can implement direct SAN, please check the requirements.
If we have a production storage that is connected with iSCSI, the storage repository only support CIFS, the V&B server is a VM, can we then implement direct SAN access ?
Yes, please see my reply regarding FC.
does it mean that "within a VM" does it mean the VM that has the V&B role, or V&B proxy role ?
Proxy.
And "connect the VM to the iSCSI network" does it mean that it should have a second nic since the VM is already on the network with ESXi hosts /vc...
The VM that holds the role of a proxy must have a block-level access to the LUN where VMs reside. It will be easier to manage and troubleshoot it if you use a dedicated nic for proxy <-> datastore iSCSI connection.

Thanks
