Oracle RAC backups?
I am looking to backup a Oracle RAC VM.
In a physical environment, can a RAC implementation be fully backed up and restored or do Oracle DBAs normally just export the DB?
The Oracle RAC VM backup is failing with a SCSI device bus-sharing error. Can I expect to be able to perform a Oracle RAC image based backup and restore?

Re: Oracle RAC backups?
In a physical environment the recommended backup for RAC is exactly the same as a normal Oracle database, with RMAN. Any good DB should know his way around RMAN, but with modern Oracle and EM you don't really have to know too much as the web interface is quite good.
For a RAC VM using physical RDM's and bus-sharing, since this disables the ability to take snapshots you can't really expect to use Veeam. If you used a different method for the shared storage, like host based iSCSI, then you can still snapshot the VM's to backup the OS drives and perhaps Oracle homes (assuming they are not on the shared media), but you might get failovers during snapshot operations based on your cluster suite timing settings.

[MERGED] Linux Oracle Rac off host/san direct backup
having the limitations of cluster independent disks can we trigger via scripting veeam do a consistent backup state in oracle, followed by lun snapshot of datastores residing oracle vms, present it to veeam vm via iscsi to do san direct backup / by vcenter scripting presentation use esxi off host backup if necessary to integrate with veeam - and then reverse process. is this aplicable? about restore fulll/granular implications?
ideas on the concept?

[MERGED] How to backup VM Windows with Oracle RAC and ASM
Hi,
We have a challenge:
backup some virtual machine (Windows 2008) with Oracle RAC and disk shared manage by ASM.
The disk shared are .vmdk disk format by ASM.
Could you some idea for "backup" and "restore" this environment?
I have think:
You have some suggest or other idea for backup and restore VM with oracle rac?
Any suggest will be very valued.
Best Regards
Andrea.

I have think:
- All disk manage by ASM are unable to backup with Veeam (these disk are .vmdk shared in virtual Machine but I think that wouldn't save by Veeam) ...like to have mount point (CIFS/NFS/WEBDAV/...)
- Save operative system disk with Veeam.
- Create a new disk manage by Windows 2008 for put backup create by RMAN and save this disk with Veeam
- Start by restore VM (I would disk with Operative Systems and disk with backup RMAN
- Create a new blank .vmdk shared disk
- From disk with backup of RMAN restore entire database
You have some suggest or other idea for backup and restore VM with oracle rac?

[MERGED] Backup RHEL with Oracle RAC
Hey
Currently our VMware Environment with ~300 VMs is fully backuped by Veeam B&R.
Now we try to get our Oracle Databases from AIS running on VMware with RHEL.
With this switch over, our DBAs want to use a Oracle RAC Cluster. Therefore it is neccessary to share a VMDK on multiple vms.
Is anyone else out there having a Oracle RAC and is doing the backups with Veeam?
How you have implemented it? Because i think there are a lot of limitations regarding snapshots on the VMs.
Does Veeam provide any best practice on how to backup a shared/clustered filesystem?
Best regards

[MERGED] Oracle and Veeam
Hi guys,
suported veeam this configuration:
2x nodes Oracle RAC 12c on VMware 5.5.
The asm devices in the vm's connected directly with the storage over iscsi protocol.
With kind regards

Re: Oracle RAC backups?
Carlos, besides the fact that Veeam B&R is a solution for virtual environments only, Oracle RAC is not supported anyway (this is mentioned in the release notes).
