Proxy access to datastores on 3PAR

For a customer I have a setup with a physical proxy server, 3PAR for storage and a vSphere environment.
Backups use all transport over FC to read from snapshots, and all is working fine.
In case of restores, should the proxy server have access to the production datastores (LUNS on the 3PAR)? If so, in which cases will it be used?
