Simplivity and Veeam

Post by Stefan_CGI »

Dear readers,

I have read that it is possible to use Veeam with Simplivity.

However, was this also the case when Simplivity backups are also used?

We are looking into connecting Veeam to Simplivity, but in the following way:

We use a Simplivity cluster that makes use of simplivity backups.
The backups run every 4 hours, every day and every week.
This backup solution is bloody fast as it makes use of VSAN.
All 4 ESXi simplivity hosts have local disks only.

Veeam is something we would like to implement for the week, month and year backups.

I can already see some issues with overlapping backups, but that should be something to fix.

I have read that i should use NBD mode for implementing Veeam, with regards to Simplivity NFS backend.
But we use a VSAN construction so i do not see that NFS issue arise, unless i miss something here.

I have a good idea on how to implement Veeam, but not in combination with a working simplivity backup environment.

Is this something that can be answered here? Or should i contact Veeam support to make it official?

THanks in advance!

Sincerely,

Stefan.

Hi Stefan, to enable GFS backups (i.e. have weekly, monthly and yearly backups) with Veeam B&R, you need to do regular backups with Veeam B&R first, as those are used as source for backup copy jobs (that do GFS).

Also please review this thread for some considerations on bringing Veeam B&R and Simplivity to work together.

Thanks for the reply foggy and andrie.

I am very confident in veeam itself and i have a good idea how to install this in the current environment.
I was a bit worried however how it would work along the simplivity backups that already are there.

We are not yet at a situation where we decided on the final infrastructure, but before i get questions i wanted to be prepared.

Thanks for the link on veeam and simplivity, this is really useful.
